The dysentery outbreaks in Central America and Chicago underscore why it has been necessary for a plumber to continually learn as new plumbing and pipefitting techniques and codes are introduced within the field. It was eventually discovered that faulty plumbing within the structure was to blame for the outbreak which resulted in the contamination of the hotel’s drinking water. According to city officials at the time, 1704 people contracted the illness while staying at city’s Congress Hotel. Hard as it may be to believe that there was once a time when American citizens were as susceptible to the devastating effects of microorganisms in drinking water, the fact is that an outbreak of amoebic dysentery occurred in Chicago during the 1933-1934 World’s Fair. During its four-year duration over half a million people contracted the illness resulting in approximately 20,000 deaths. Among the more dramatic of these outbreaks is the one that occurred throughout Central America beginning in 1968. Common in impoverished regions, this illness affects over 125 million people annually and has the ability to cause epidemics that are especially devastating for those under the age of five.

Both are spread via fecal contamination in the water and, with respect to dysentery, can originate from one of two sources: bacteria or amoeba. Naturally, this benefits a vast majority of Americans nationwide in that we’re collectively afforded the relative luxury of knowing that our water supply and waste removal systems have been installed and deemed safe by highly trained professionals. In this day and age, stringent plumber standards are placing a greater emphasis on plumber education requirements throughout myriad vocational and trade schools around the nation.
